Who Is At Risk From Heartburn
The backward movement of food and acid from the stomach towards the esophagus through the gastro esophageal sphincter is commonly termed by doctors as heartburn. This condition is a rare occurrence in an individual’s life but it does affect some people more than others. Those at the highest risk from heartburn include people with poor lifestyle habits. This includes smokers, alcohol drinkers, caffeine and carbonated soft drink users etcetera. Furthermore, the use of excessive antacids also damages the stomach and forces it to produce more acid than necessary.
Some food stuffs that are naturally aggravating with heartburn condition are citrus fruits, tomato juice, fatty food stuffs, chocolate, mint and peppermint. The intake of excessive amounts of aspirin and ibuprofen also leads to heartburn. Other than lifestyle factors, women with pregnancy are more prone to this condition and a person suffering from ulcers induced by H. Pylori may also face this situation along with large ulcers.
